Diagnostic Care

North Fork Animal Clinic is proud to use state of the art digital radiograph technology for your pet's treatment.  Radiographs (x-rays) allow us to evaluate your pet's musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems.  Using radiographs, we can determine the area and severity of bone fractures, identify pulmonary or heart disease, and locate foreign bodies (toys, bones, etc.) inside your pet's stomach.

Surgical Care

Preparation for General Anesthesia and Surgery

General anesthesia is characterized by a sleep like state, generalized muscle relaxation, and pain relief.

With modern drugs and advanced equipment, the risk of general anesthesia and surgery is minimal for healthy pets.  The potential for complications still exist, and the best way to decrease the risk for your pet is to have a pre-anesthetic blood test performed.  Pre-anesthetic blood testing is REQUIRED for all pets over three years of age and is highly recommended for all animals.  This allows the veterinarians to determine if your pet has any underlying problems such as dehydration, diabetes, and liver or kidney disease, which could cause complications.  In addition the test will provide a baseline in the event of your pets' health changes.  Our laboratory is fully equipped to perform these tests and have results prior to surgery.  While under anesthesia your pets respiratory rate and heart rate are monitored to ensure proper levels of anesthesia are maintained.  Your pet will be monitored using electrocardiogram.  Electrocardiogram involves attaching electrodes to specific points on the pet's body.  The electrodes detect tiny electrical signals sent from the heart with each heartbeat.  The veterinarian examines the signals to determine if the pet pet has a normally functioning heart.

Twelve hours prior to surgery, restrict food intake.  This will help avoid gastrointestinal upset that may result from anesthesia.  Hospital staff should be informed if your pet was fed beyond the time previously suggested.  Please allow a few minutes at the time of surgery admission to go over required paperwork.  This is a good time for the veterinary assistant to answer any questions.

Our veterinarians perform routine surgeries from spay/neuters, declaws, mass removals to more complicated surgeries, including eye surgeries and orthopedic surgeries.

Orthopedic surgeries

  • Fracture repair
  • Femoral head osteotomy
  • Pattelar luxation repair

Laser surgery

We offer laser surgery for feline declaws. Lasers cut with a beam of light, which seals nerve endings so there is little pain after the procedure.  Lasers also seal blood vessels as they cut so there is very little bleeding and usually no need for bandaging the feet after surgery.  There is also less swelling since the laser seals lymphatic vessels and creates less tissue trauma.  Cats who have laser declaws also have faster recovery.  Laser surgery has great benefits.

North Fork Animal Clinic has performed in excess of 43,526 surgeries within our 33 years of serving the community.

Pet Dental Care

Routine dental care can help prevent serious dental disease and infections.  Dental cleanings are an important part of your pet's preventative health care plan.

A dental cleaning requires your pet to anesthetized.  We perform a thorough physical exam and blood tests to ensure your pet is healthy enough for the dental cleaning.

Once your pet is administered anesthesia, the cleaning begins.  The teeth are thoroughly cleaned, both above and below the gum line.  Once the teeth are cleaned they are then polished, which creates a smooth, lustrous surface more resistant to plaque build up.  After the teeth are polished, we apply a fluoride treatment to help strengthen the enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.

At surgery discharge your pet will be sent home with a sample of toothpaste and a veterinary assistant will gladly teach you how to brush your pets' teeth.  This will promote good oral hygiene.

Grooming

Grooming is both hygienic care and cleaning of a cat or dog. Brushing your pet ever day keeps the coat in good condition, by removing dirt and spreads oil throughout the coat, prevents tangles and keeps skin clean and dry. As a pet owner, you want your pet to look and feel its best. You can accomplish this by properly maintaining your pet’s coat. Whether you have a show pet or a house pet, a clean, shiny, healthy coat is always a great thing to give to your pet. We recommend your pet’s nails be trimmed at least once a month, and teeth brushed twice a week. For all your grooming needs call and schedule an appointment with Kim.
